Sumco Reports One Segment and Six Places

Under 【セグメント情報】 in SUMCO CORPORATION's annual securities report for 2025, each year gets one sentence: the group is a single segment, 高純度シリコン, and the segment tables are omitted. What the note prints instead, under 【関連情報】, is sales in six regions by customer location — Taiwan 153,232 million yen (US$935.5 million) of 409,670 million (US$2,501.0 million) — tangible fixed assets in Japan, Taiwan and one その他, and a single named customer, 住友商事株式会社, at 27.0 percent of sales.

The note headed (セグメント情報等) in the annual securities report of SUMCO CORPORATION for its 27th fiscal year, January to December 2025, filed on EDINET on March 26, 2026, begins on page 108 of 140 with two sentences, one for each year: 当社グループの事業は「高純度シリコン」のみの単一セグメントであるため、記載を省略しております — the group's business is a single segment, high-purity silicon, so the segment disclosure is omitted. The numbers are under the next heading, 【関連情報】, related information. For each of the two years it prints one sentence on products and services, a table of sales in six regions plus a total, a table of tangible fixed assets in three regions plus a total, and a table of major customers with one row. The total of the regional table, 409,670 million yen (US$2,501.0 million), is the consolidated 売上高, and the 26th report, filed March 27, 2025, has the same shape at pages 103 to 104.

What the one segment contains is set out in 3【事業の内容】 on page 7. The group — the parent, 16 consolidated subsidiaries, three non-consolidated subsidiaries and one equity-method affiliate — is described as a single segment, 「高純度シリコン事業」, whose principal business is the manufacture and sale of silicon wafers to semiconductor makers. The page describes the products by diameter, 100mm, 125mm, 150mm, 200mm and 300mm, and by finish: ポリッシュトウェーハ, polished wafers, and エピタキシャルウェーハ, epitaxial wafers with a further layer grown on the polished surface. It divides manufacturing into two stages, 単結晶引上工程, pulling a single-crystal ingot from polysilicon melted in a quartz crucible, and ウェーハ加工工程, slicing the ingot to a thickness of 1mm or less and grinding, polishing and cleaning the slices.

The phrase 単一セグメント recurs wherever the form would otherwise ask for a breakdown by segment. With whitespace removed it appears 10 times in the 27th report, on pages 7, 11, 28, 29, 32, 33, 34, 108 and 109: once in the business description, once each in the employee table, the management discussion, the production and sales tables, research and development, the facilities table and the facilities plan, and three times in the note, the last of them in the item on impairment losses by reporting segment, for 2024. Where the form would ask for a breakdown by segment, the report prints a single row, a sentence, or a table split on another axis: by site on page 33, by region and by customer in the note.

The regional sales table is the widest thing in the note. For 2025 it reads 日本 79,562, 米国 36,345, 中国 51,976, 台湾 153,232, 韓国 40,492, 欧州他 48,061, 合計 409,670, in millions of yen — US$485.7 million, US$221.9 million, US$317.3 million, US$935.5 million, US$247.2 million, US$293.4 million and US$2,501.0 million at ¥163.8 to the dollar. The note under the table says 売上高は顧客の所在地を基礎とし、国又は地域に分類しております: sales are classified by country or region on the basis of the customer's location. Taiwan is the largest column, and the printed total is the 売上高 of the five-year indicator table on page 2.

The 27th report prints the same table for 2024, and the 26th report prints it for 2023, so three years can be set side by side without computing anything. Taiwan reads 147,769, 138,764 and 153,232 (US$902.1 million, US$847.2 million, US$935.5 million) for 2023, 2024 and 2025. Japan reads 81,930, 83,513 and 79,562 (US$500.2 million, US$509.8 million, US$485.7 million); the United States 44,407, 36,403 and 36,345 (US$271.1 million, US$222.2 million, US$221.9 million); China 58,636, 50,987 and 51,976 (US$358.0 million, US$311.3 million, US$317.3 million); Korea 40,691, 39,976 and 40,492 (US$248.4 million, US$244.1 million, US$247.2 million); Europe and other 52,506, 46,973 and 48,061 (US$320.5 million, US$286.8 million, US$293.4 million). The totals are 425,941, 396,619 and 409,670 (US$2,600.4 million, US$2,421.4 million, US$2,501.0 million). The chart plots the eighteen printed values.

The second table, 有形固定資産, tangible fixed assets, has three regions rather than six. For 2025: 日本 440,321, 台湾 209,487, その他 13,616, 合計 663,425 (US$2,688.2 million, US$1,278.9 million, US$83.1 million, US$4,050.2 million). For 2024: 476,139, 203,809, 12,400 and 692,350 (US$2,906.8 million, US$1,244.3 million, US$75.7 million, US$4,226.8 million); for 2023, in the 26th report: 373,476, 169,973, 8,544 and 551,994 (US$2,280.1 million, US$1,037.7 million, US$52.2 million, US$3,369.9 million). The regions that have their own sales column — the United States, China, Korea, Europe and other — have no column of their own here; the table's headings are 日本, 台湾 and その他.

PLATE 6 / NOMENCLATURE TYPE CASEREGISTER C-116 / SPECIES ENTERED: 4TYPE 01Indicators and TargetsTYPE 02Indicators & TargetsTYPE 03Indicators, TargetsTYPE 04Indicators · TargetsMorphology: identical / Entries retained separately
Fig. — Morphology identical. Registered as four species on the strength of their labels.

The plants behind the two named columns are on page 33, 2【主要な設備の状況】, which prints book values by site rather than by region: 九州事業所伊万里 in Saga, 342,182 million yen (US$2,089.0 million); 九州事業所佐賀, 5,616 (US$34.3 million); 米沢工場 in Yamagata, 6,514 (US$39.8 million); the plant of SUMCO TECHXIV株式会社 in Omura, Nagasaki, 58,493 (US$357.1 million); and the plant of FORMOSA SUMCO TECHNOLOGY CORPORATION in 雲林縣, Taiwan, 208,663 (US$1,273.9 million). The facilities section, too, opens by saying that the breakdown by segment is omitted because there is one segment, and its 2025 capital expenditure, 79,957 million yen (US$488.1 million), is one figure, with その主なものは — the main part of it — for capacity in 300mm advanced wafers.

The third table, 3.主要な顧客ごとの情報, has one row for 2025 and one for 2024: 住友商事株式会社, 110,600 million yen (US$675.2 million) and 98,193 million yen (US$599.5 million), with 高純度シリコン printed as the related segment. The same customer appears in ③ 生産、受注及び販売の実績 on page 29, where the note to the sales table gives the share of total sales: 24.8 percent in 2024 and 27.0 percent in 2025. The 26th report's customer table for 2023, on page 103, has two rows: 住友商事株式会社 at 102,478 million yen (US$625.6 million) and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. at 43,687 million yen (US$266.7 million); its table for 2024, on page 104, has the one row. The shares are in that report's sales table on page 29 — 24.1 percent and 10.3 percent for 2023 — where the Samsung row prints − for 2024, with a note that the figure is omitted because the share of total sales was 10%未満, under 10 percent. The EDINET code list classes 住友商事株式会社 under 卸売業, wholesale. The sales table classifies by the customer's location; the desk reads the two tables separately and does not place any customer in a column.

The line the report draws inside the one segment is by wafer diameter, and in the pages the desk read it is drawn in sentences. 4【経営者による財政状態、経営成績及びキャッシュ・フローの状況の分析】 on page 28 describes 2025 in two classes: 300mm, where 先端品, advanced products, had strong demand with the increase in AI semiconductors while the rest recovered slowly under customers' inventory adjustment, and 200mm以下, 200mm and below, where shipments stayed low through the year. 1【経営方針、経営環境及び対処すべき課題等】 on page 13 uses the same two classes for the outlook, adds 150mm以下 as a third for the small diameters it expects to shrink, and calls 300mm the 主力製品, the main product. One figure attaches to the smaller class, in the prior year's special losses on page 89: under 事業構造改善費用, the decision to end wafer production at SUMCO TECHXIV株式会社's 宮崎工場 as part of the reorganisation of 200mm以下 production carried an impairment loss of 4,624 million yen (US$28.2 million) in 2024, with a further 1,189 million yen (US$7.3 million) of losses on spare parts and other items; the 2025 column of the impairment line on page 84 prints −. In the extracted text the diameter split is carried by these passages, by that note and by the plant lists; a figure by diameter elsewhere in the report would not be caught by this reading.

The plant lists are on page 7. For 300mm the report names five places: 佐賀県伊万里市, 佐賀県杵島郡江北町, 山形県米沢市, 長崎県大村市 and 台湾. For 200mm and below it names nine: those four Japanese sites, 北海道千歳市 and 宮崎県宮崎市, and 米国, インドネシア and 台湾. Semiconductor-grade polysilicon is made in 三重県四日市市 and in the United States. Sales are handled from Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka in Japan, a sales function in the United States, sales subsidiaries in Taiwan and Singapore, technical-support subsidiaries in Taiwan and Korea, and a sales subsidiary in the United Kingdom for Europe and nearby regions.

One subsidiary is large enough to carry its own five figures in 4【関係会社の状況】 on page 10. FORMOSA SUMCO TECHNOLOGY CORPORATION, of 雲林縣, Taiwan, is held at 43 percent of voting rights, all of it indirect, and consolidated under note 3 because the group 実質的に支配, controls it in substance; note 4 says its sales, net of intra-group sales, exceed 10 percent of consolidated sales, and prints 売上高 59,327, 経常利益 3,803, 当期純利益 3,002, 純資産額 122,316 and 総資産額 254,794 million yen (US$362.2 million, US$23.2 million, US$18.3 million, US$746.7 million, US$1,555.5 million). 5【重要な契約等】 on page 32 dates the joint-venture agreement with FORMOSA PLASTICS CORPORATION and ASIA PACIFIC INVESTMENT CO. to August 4, 1995. The note on business combinations on page 105 records that SUMCO TECHXIV株式会社 sold part of its shares in the company to non-controlling shareholders on May 26, September 1 and December 18, 2025, without a change in the scope of consolidation; the purpose the note states is 台湾株式市場での当該株式の流動性を向上させること, improving the liquidity of the shares on the Taiwan stock market, and capital surplus rose by 617 million yen (US$3.8 million) as a result.

当社グループの事業は「高純度シリコン」のみの単一セグメントであるため、記載を省略しております — the group's business is a single segment, high-purity silicon, so the disclosure is omitted: the sentence under 【セグメント情報】 for each of the two years, in a report where the phrase 単一セグメント appears ten times.

5【従業員の状況】 on page 11 has the same shape as the note. The consolidated table has one row, 高純度シリコン 9,714 (769): employees at December 31, 2025, with the annual average of temporary staff in parentheses. The filing company's row prints 5,065 (386). Headcount by place is on page 33 instead, in the facilities table: 3,296 (257) at Imari, 497 (23) at Saga, 318 (12) at Yonezawa, 1,043 (26) at SUMCO TECHXIV in Omura and 1,480 at FORMOSA SUMCO in Yunlin, with − in the parentheses.

Sales by region in the (セグメント情報等) 【関連情報】 note of SUMCO CORPORATION's annual securities reports, in millions of yen, classified by the customer's location as the note states: Japan 81,930 / 83,513 / 79,562; United States 44,407 / 36,403 / 36,345; China 58,636 / 50,987 / 51,976; Taiwan 147,769 / 138,764 / 153,232; Korea 40,691 / 39,976 / 40,492; Europe and other 52,506 / 46,973 / 48,061 for 2023 / 2024 / 2025; printed totals 425,941 / 396,619 / 409,670. Each dot is a printed value; nothing is added, divided or differenced.

③ 生産、受注及び販売の実績 on page 29 is three items under one segment name. Production for 2025 is 355,585 million yen (US$2,170.8 million) at manufacturing cost, 109.7 percent of the prior year. For orders the report gives a sentence in place of a figure: 大半が受注生産形態をとらないため, most products are not made to order, so the scale of orders is not shown in amount or volume. Sales are 409,670 million yen (US$2,501.0 million), 103.3 percent of the prior year, the same figure as the total of the note's regional sales table.

Two other notes point to the segment note rather than printing their own breakdown. ※1 under (連結損益計算書関係) on page 88 says that revenue from contracts with customers is not separated from other revenue on the income statement and that its amount is 「注記事項(セグメント情報等)」に記載のとおり, as stated in the segment note; (収益認識関係) on page 106 says the same of the disaggregation of revenue. The regional sales table by customer location is therefore also the report's disaggregation of revenue. Page 106 goes on to say when revenue is recognised: on arrival at the customer for domestic sales, on arrival at the point agreed with the customer for exports, on the customer's acceptance for consignment goods, and over time by production progress for some customers; consideration is received within roughly five months of the performance obligation being satisfied.

The results a segment table would have split are given as consolidated figures. Page 28 gives 2025 sales of 409,670 million yen (US$2,501.0 million), 3.3 percent above the prior year; operating profit of 1,342 million yen (US$8.2 million), 96.4 percent below; an ordinary loss of 3,886 million yen (US$23.7 million) against an ordinary profit of 37,457 million yen (US$228.7 million) a year earlier; and a net loss attributable to owners of the parent of 11,751 million yen (US$71.7 million) against a profit of 19,877 million yen (US$121.3 million). The sentence that follows those figures is the one already quoted: since the business is a single segment, the breakdown is omitted. Research and development on page 32, 11,151 million yen (US$68.1 million), 2.7 percent of consolidated sales, is printed the same way, one figure for one segment.

Method. The desk retrieved the 27th report (S100XRR5) and the 26th report (S100VFYA) as PDFs through the EDINET API and read pages 10, 29, 33, 108 and 109 of the first and pages 29, 103 and 104 of the second with pdfplumber's table extraction, keeping the whitespace that marks cell boundaries; the sentences quoted are from the page text. The count of 単一セグメント was made on the whole text with whitespace removed, so that a phrase broken across a line is still found. The six regional values of each year were added once as a check and fall short of the printed totals by 2 million yen (about US$12,000) for 2023, 3 million yen (about US$18,000) for 2024 and 2 million yen (about US$12,000) for 2025, which is consistent with a table presented in whole millions of yen; the printed totals are the ones used. No share of sales by region is computed, no year-on-year difference is taken, and dollar figures are conversions at ¥163.8 = US$1 for reference.

What would change our mind

The one-segment reading rests on the report's own sentence, and the article treats the (セグメント情報等) note as the segment disclosure; a reader who wants the business split by wafer diameter will find that split, in the pages the desk read, in prose and in plant lists, and a table by diameter elsewhere in the report or in another document would not be caught here. The customer-location basis of the sales table is the note's; the desk does not know in which column sales to 住友商事株式会社, or to any customer, are counted, and does not place them. The Taiwan row of the assets table, 209,487 million yen (US$1,278.9 million), and the book value of the Yunlin plant on page 33, 208,663 million yen (US$1,273.9 million), are close, but they come from two tables with different scopes and are not equated. The three-year comparison places printed values side by side and says nothing about why they moved; the reasons on page 28 are the report's. The sums of the six regional values fall short of the printed totals by 2 million yen (about US$12,000) for 2023, 3 million yen (about US$18,000) for 2024 and 2 million yen (about US$12,000) for 2025; the desk reads this as consistent with a table in whole millions of yen and uses the printed totals. The count of 10 for 単一セグメント is a string count on extracted text and would miss an occurrence that extraction mangled.
