What Japan's Biggest Companies Pay

SubjectThirty-four large filers, June 2026 annual reports

SeriesThe People Pages

Every Japanese listed company prints its average annual salary, average age and average length of service in its annual report. Thirty-four of the largest filed in June. The numbers are there in Japanese, and the row they sit on says which company they describe.

A Japanese annual securities report carries a field an American 10-K does not. Under 【従業員の状況】, the filer prints four numbers about its own employees: how many there are, their average age, their average length of service, and their average annual pay. The form requires it of every company that files an annual securities report — investment trusts file on a different form — and the figures are published in Japanese.

Thirty-five of Japan's largest listed companies filed those reports in June 2026. Thirty-four of them are read here the same way; the thirty-fifth is named below. Here is what they print.

Keyence prints the highest average annual pay in the set: ¥21,783,259 (US$132,987), against a headcount of 3,306 and an average age of 35.0 — the youngest in the set. Central Japan Railway is next youngest at 37.0.

The three general trading houses follow, and they follow closely. Mitsubishi Corporation prints ¥21,125,472 (US$128,971), Mitsui & Co. ¥20,589,000 (US$125,696) and ITOCHU ¥19,911,534 (US$121,560). Their average ages are 42.3, 42.0 and 42.0.

Their lengths of service are printed three different ways for three nearly equal numbers: 17年7ヶ月, 17.4 years and 17年9か月 — about 17.58, 17.4 and 17.75 years. The widest gap between them is four months, and two of the three companies express it in months while the third uses a decimal.

After the trading houses, Tokyo Electron at ¥13,804,159 (US$84,274) and SoftBank Group at ¥13,195,551 (US$80,559). Then the three bank holding companies, within ¥138,000 of each other: Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group ¥11,803,000 (US$72,057), Mitsubishi UFJ ¥11,702,000 (US$71,441), Mizuho ¥11,665,000 (US$71,215).

Toyota, the largest employer in the set at 73,133, prints ¥10,060,464 (US$61,419). Nintendo prints ¥9,824,708 (US$59,980) for 3,084. Honda prints ¥9,326,000 (US$56,935) for 32,547. Oriental Land, which operates Tokyo Disney Resort, prints ¥6,051,217 (US$36,943) for 6,528.

Now the row those numbers sit on. The heading is 提出会社の状況 — the state of the filing company — and the filing company is the legal entity that lodged the report. Where that entity is a holding company, the figures describe the holding company.

SoftBank Group's report prints an average salary beside a headcount of 276. FUJIFILM Holdings' beside 1,198. Panasonic Holdings' beside 1,431. Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group's beside 1,678. Sony Group's beside 2,166. Whether the salary is averaged over exactly that headcount is set out in each report's own notes, and the notes differ.

Sony Group's own report, on an earlier page, gives the consolidated headcount: 94,900. The salary figure describes the 2,166. Every one of the seven filers in this set whose name contains Holdings or Group employs fewer than four thousand people in the row that carries its salary.

The filers that are operating companies give numbers an outsider would read as the company: Toyota's 73,133, Denso's 43,889, East Japan Railway's 39,598, Honda's 32,547, Nippon Steel's 32,102, Hitachi's 25,934, Mitsubishi Heavy's 23,373.

Length of service sorts by industry rather than by pay. Denso prints 22.9 years, Honda 21.0, Advantest 20.16, SMC 19.7, Nippon Steel 19.5. Oriental Land prints 10.1 and SoftBank Group 10.1.

Age sorts differently again. HOYA prints 47.6, Advantest 45.68, Daiichi Sankyo 45.0, Denso 44.8. Central Japan Railway prints 37.0 and Keyence 35.0.

Sony Group’s filing prints an average salary beside a headcount of 2,166. The group it heads employs 94,900.

On units and notation. The same field is printed in different denominations and different formats, and the report says which each time. Keyence prints 平均年間給与(円)above 21,783,259. Honda prints 平均年間給与(千円) above 9,326. Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group prints its age and length of service as 39歳4月 and 14年7月 where most of the set prints a decimal. Hitachi attaches the unit to each value: 25,934人, 42.2歳, 18.1年, 9,949,714円.

¥6m ¥10m ¥14m ¥18m ¥22m 1k 10k KEYENCE Mitsubishi Corporation SoftBank Group Corp. SONY GROUP TOYOTA MOTOR DENSO ORIENTAL LAND CO. [ average annual pay, filing company ] [ employees, filing company — log scale ] name contains Holdings or Group
Average annual pay against employee count, both for the filing company, from 34 June 2026 securities reports. Circles marked in red are filers whose own name contains Holdings or Group. The horizontal scale is logarithmic: the leftmost filer employs 276 people and the rightmost 73,133.

On the counts. The thirty-four are securities reports filed between 5 and 30 June 2026 by large Japanese listed companies with a March financial year, identified by securities code in EDINET's index and company table. A thirty-fifth was selected and is not counted here: Recruit Holdings prints the same four figures, but its report places them where the extraction used for the others does not reach them, and this piece does not quote numbers it did not read the same way as the rest. Companies of comparable size whose financial year ends in another month file outside June and are absent.

Each figure is read from the 【従業員の状況】 table in the filed PDF, taken from the cell under the printed column heading rather than by position. That distinction matters: several filers place a column headed 平均年間給与の対前事業年度増減率, the year-on-year change in average pay, immediately beside the pay itself, and reading by position takes the change for the pay. Where a filer prints 千円 the figure is multiplied by 1,000, and the unit is recorded in the sources.

On currency: yen figures are converted at ¥163.8 = US$1, the single rate this file uses, taken for 24 July 2026, for which the daily reference rate is 163.82. The reports print yen only.

What this does not establish: what any individual is paid, or whether two companies' figures are comparable. Each report defines its own population in its own notes — some exclude executives, some exclude seconded staff, some count temporary employees separately — and the headcount a salary is averaged over is not always the headcount printed beside it. This piece reports what each company prints.

Thirty-four companies, thirty-four averages, and one row heading that says which company each average is about.

What would change our mind

The claim is narrow: that each figure quoted is printed in the named company's June 2026 securities report under 【従業員の状況】 for the filing company, in the unit and notation recorded in the sources. It is not a claim about group-wide pay, about what any individual earns, or that two companies' figures are computed on the same population — each report defines its own in its notes. Thirty-five companies were selected; thirty-four are read here and Recruit Holdings is named but not counted. The headcount printed beside a salary is not necessarily the population the salary is averaged over; each report says which in its own notes. Companies of comparable size with non-March financial years file outside June and are absent.
