Listed Twice, Described Differently

Four semi-annual reports appear on one week's index under two different terms. The specification says which listing is the corrected one — and that the document itself was never touched.

On 14 August 2026, EDINET's list described Shanon's semi-annual report as 半期報告書-第26期(2026/01/01-2026/06/30). On 18 August it described the same document — the same document ID, the same submission timestamp — as 半期報告書-第26期(2026/01/01-2026/12/31). The description named six months, then twelve. Both listings were still standing on 23 August, when this index was pulled, each under its own date.

Three other index entries do the same thing across the same two dates: Agora Hospitality Group's 第89期, Glad Cube's 第20期 and KOZO Holdings' 第59期. In each, the first listing names the half and the second names the year.

That is four documents out of 233 — but four is what this window holds, not what the month did. Two more turn inside the previous week's index: Canon Marketing Japan's 第59期, listed on 5 August naming the half and on the 7th naming the year, and Bellpark's 第34期, listed on the 6th and again on the 10th. Three more turn across the seam between the two indexes — Mobile Factory's 第26期, Senshukai's 第82期 and Gungho Online Entertainment's 第30期 each name the half in the earlier index and the year in this one, on 19, 18 and 14 August. Those three are the same three deducted below as submitted before this window. Nine across the two weeks, and the count of any one week depends on the day it is taken.

Between 14 and 19 August 2026 the list carried 233 semi-annual reports, counted by document ID rather than by row. One hundred and fifty-seven were filed by operating companies, 75 for domestic investment trusts and one for a foreign investment trust.

Among the 157, the description names a 365-day term in 152 cases. Four name 181 days: Asics (7936) as 第73期(2026/01/01-2026/06/30), and Nabtesco (6268), Nihon Wasou Holdings (2499) and Ultrafabrics Holdings (4235) the same way. One, Space Market (4487), names 273 days as 第13期(2026/01/01-2026/09/30).

Those four appear on the list once each. The four whose listings were corrected appear twice. Whether four reports name the half or eight depends on which listing a reader happens to hold.

The index marks the change, and the specification says how. EDINET's API returns a field called docInfoEditStatus, defined as: 財務局職員が書類を修正した情報は"1"、修正された書類は"2"、それ以外は"0"が出力されます — a value of 1 marks the record of an edit made by Finance Bureau staff, 2 marks the document whose information was edited. In all four cases the 14 August row reads 2 and the 18 August row reads 1. The 18 August rows also carry an operation timestamp from that day — KOZO Holdings' at 09:50, Glad Cube's at 10:37, Shanon's at 15:06, Agora Hospitality's at 16:28 — and the 14 August rows carry none. The structured period-end field moved with the text in all four, from 2026-06-30 to 2026-12-31.

Four hundred seats, four hundred programmes, and one man in row K who has read the biographies.

So the later listing is the corrected one. The specification's own worked example has the same shape: the corrected document's row carries a null timestamp, a status of 2 and the old description; the row recording the correction carries a timestamp, a status of 1 and the new one.

What was corrected was not the report. The specification is explicit about this: 提出された書類自体は修正されないため、書類取得API で取得できる書類は、書類情報修正の前後で同一です — the submitted document is not itself amended, so the file the document API returns is the same before and after. What gets corrected is the information registered alongside it, and the list of fields that can be corrected includes 期間(至) and 提出書類概要, the period-end and the description. Those are the two fields that moved.

The field itself can do either. A semi-annual report is filed against a term, and the description can name either the term the report sits inside or the half the report covers. In these four it named one and was corrected to the other, four days later, without the report changing.

The term numbers run further than the periods do. The lowest among the operating companies is 2, at Agent IG Holdings (377A). The highest is 202, at Tokai Kisen (9173). Dentsu Group (4324) is at 178 and Ebara (6361) at 162. The median is 23.

A term number is a count a company keeps of itself, and the index prints the 202 in the same field and the same font as the 2.

The 75 domestic fund entries divide differently. Thirty-seven name 364 days, 33 name 365, two name 367, two name 338 and one names 181. Their term numbers run 1 to 65, median 11. State Street Global Advisors files two of them, one for each of two funds, both reading 第1期(2025/11/17-2026/10/20) — 338 days — a first term, short of a year because it starts when the trust does and ends on the term-end the trust already keeps.

Set beside the funds' own annual securities reports, read here from the week before, the two forms lean opposite ways. Of the 182 annual reports in that count, 123 named terms shorter than seven months and 59 named 364 or 365 days. Here the semi-annual reports mostly name the longer span.

A description is not a fact about a document. It is a fact about a list, on a day.

One hundred and eighty-nine of the 233 were submitted on 14 August, a Friday; 30 on the 17th, five on the 18th and nine on the 19th. Sixteen filers lodged more than one, and 38 entries fall into 14 groups that share a filer and a term number.

Nine semi-annual reports whose index description was rewritten from a half-year term to a full-year one. The hollow circle is the day the report was submitted; the filled circle is the day EDINET's index records the correction. The line between them is how long the earlier description stood.

Capital International filed nine of the fund entries and Norinchukin Zenkyoren Asset Management eight. Asset Management One and Amova Asset Management filed seven each.

On provenance. Every figure here is read from EDINET's list entries and not from inside the 233 documents. The counts are of documents rather than of rows. The pull returns 240 rows carrying this document type; four documents are listed on two dates each, which takes it to 236, and three of those 236 were submitted on 7 and 10 August, before this window, which takes it to 233.

Where a document was listed twice with two different descriptions, the later one is the one counted. That follows the specification rather than a preference: the 18 August rows are the records of the correction and the 14 August rows are the documents whose information was corrected. It moves four of the numbers above. Counting the earlier listing instead — that is, counting the pre-correction values — would put eight entries at 181 days rather than four, and 148 rather than 152 at 365.

What this does not establish: why any particular entry was corrected. The specification defines the field and the fields it covers; it does not give reasons, and neither does the list. Nor does this piece establish whether the reports themselves cover six months in every case. The index describes; the documents were not opened.

A description is not a fact about a document. It is a fact about a list, on a day.

What would change our mind

The claim is narrow: that EDINET's list for submissions between 14 and 19 August 2026 carried 233 semi-annual reports by document ID; that four of them were listed on both 14 and 18 August with descriptions naming six months and then twelve; and that among the 157 filed by operating companies the later listings give 152 at 365 days, four at 181 and one at 273. The counts and descriptions here are read from the index; the identification of the later listing as the record of the correction follows EDINET's API specification. An error in either is an error here. The piece identifies the later listing as the record of the correction, following the API specification's definition of docInfoEditStatus, and a third listing with a third description would change it again. What would undercut the rest: a fifth document listed twice that my comparison missed, since the comparison is between descriptions attached to the same document ID; a classification that puts the foreign investment trust entry back among the operating companies, which would return 158 and 153; or an index pull on a later date showing the four back at 181.
